SIKESTON -- A blizzard warning remains in effect across Southeast Missouri and Southern Illinois through noon today.
The National Weather Service in Paducah, Ky., said 6 to 12 inches of snow is expected across the region. Locally higher amounts are possible in small bands of intense snowfall.
Gusty winds ranging from 35 to 45 miles per hour along with falling snow and blowing snow has reduced visibilities to near zero at times.
The heaviest snowfall occurred between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. today. Weather conditions are expected to improve between 6 a.m. and noon today.
However, roadways will take longer to improve, the Weather Service said. Early today emergency personnel were responding to numerous reports of motorists stranded along the roadways.
As of 6 a.m. today, the Missouri Department of Transportation reported all roads in Southeast Missouri snow-covered.
