Charleston sets tone with big win over Delta

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- In a day filled with lopsided affairs and downright ugly blowouts, the Charleston Bluejays set the tone with a 107-24 win against Delta during the first round of the seMissourian Christmas Tournament at the Show Me Center in Cape Girardeau.

The top-seeded Bluejays pounced early outscoring the Bobcats 30-5 in the first quarter putting the game out of reach in quick fashion.

Shandor Webster led the Bluejays with 23 points while Michael Hull added 15 and both Sumner Foster and Darrion Carter chipped in 14.

Charleston will play Oran today at 4:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals.

The fourth seeded Scott County Central Braves needed a quarter, but they finally put away the Woodland Cardinals 76-41.

After ending the first frame ahead by six, the Braves rattled off 50 points in the second and third quarters while holding Woodland to 24.

Larandis Banks led Scott Central with 18 points. Jaylen Porter and Chris Brown added 16 and 14 respectively.

The Braves will take on fifth seeded Jackson at 9 p.m. today during the quarterfinals.

Jumping out to an 18-point lead, the No. 8 Oran Eagles held on for a 68-56 win over ninth seeded Scott City.

Alex Heuring led Oran with 20 points. Scott City was led by Jonathan McFall's 22 points.

Oran will take on Charleston at 4:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals while Scott City falls to the consolation bracket and will play Delta at 1:30 p.m.

After leading 12-10 after the first quarter, the Chaffee Red Devils slowly allowed the seventh seeded Advance Hornets to claim a lead and pull away for a 66-45 win.

Chaffee fell behind 29-25 at halftime and then 47-37 after the third quarter. Advance outscored the Red Devils 19-8 in the final frame to take the game.

Peyton Montgomery led Chaffee, the No. 10 seed, with 14 points. Advance was led by Ethan Barr's 29 and Lane Below's 24.

Chaffee will take on Meadow Heights at 10:30 a.m. today on the consolation side, while Advance plays Cape Central at 6 p.m.

Notre Dame 98, Bell City 14

In the most lopsided game of the first day, the Notre Dame Bulldogs routed No. 14 seed Bell City 98-14.

After the Cubs scored the game's first basket, Notre Dame ran off a 62-0 run to take a 62-4 lead with them into halftime. The Bulldogs led 30-2 after the first quarter.

Notre Dame outscored the Cubs 23-3 in the third quarter as well.

The Bulldogs, the third seed, were led by Quinn Poythress' 17 points. Cody DeBrock and Grant Ressel each scored 13.

Notre Dame will play No. 6 Leopold at 7:30 p.m. Bell City drops to the consolation side and will play Oak Ridge at noon.
