NEW MADRID -- Emma Marie Riley Maxwell, longtime New Madrid resident, passed away surrounded by family Jan. 2, 2013, in her home.

Born Nov. 5, 1913, on a family farm near New Madrid, she was the fifth of seven children of Charlotte Lewis and Edwin Howard Riley. Educated in New Madrid at the Immaculate Conception School, she graduated from Visitation Academy in St. Louis in 1931. She was the oldest member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Madrid.

On May 18, 1935, she married Floyce Maxwell of Dyersburg, Tenn., to whom she was married for 39 years before he passed away in 1974. She and Floyce resided in Washington, Mo., and Eagle Rock, Calif., before returning to New Madrid. She was a homemaker and farm owner, as well as owner-operator of a newspaper delivery service in Memphis, St. Louis and southeast Missouri.

Survivors include: four sons and two daughters-in-law, Floyce Maxwell Jr. of Springfield, William "Bill" and Erma Maxwell, David Maxwell and John "Larry" Maxwell of New Madrid and Mary Ellen Maxwell of Moyock, N.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Kathryn and Martin Edmonds of Independence; one sister-in-law, Carletha Riley; and 13 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sons, Robert "Bobby" Maxwell, Edwin Howard Maxwell and Paul Richard Maxwell; five brothers, Henry Clay "Mike" Riley, Lilbourn Lewis "Pud" Riley, Edwin Howard "Punk" Riley, Robert Alfred Riley and Lewis Camden Riley; and one sister, Dorothy Riley Phillips.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Friday at the Richards Funeral Home.

Services will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. David Hulshof officiating.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Jim Maxwell, Peter Maxwell, Matthew Maxwell, Paul Senne and Aaron Senne; and great-grandson, Joe Maxwell.

Honorary pallbearers are: Dick Phillips Jr., Edward Riley, Steve Riley, Edwin Riley, Robert "Wub" Riley, Jim Mills and Tony Jones.
