Bulldogs blast Fredericktown on the road 74-42

Wednesday, January 9, 2013

FREDERICKTOWN -- The Sikeston Bulldogs improved to 13-0 on the season with a 74-42 road victory over Fredericktown on Tuesday.

It was the Bulldogs' final test before an intriguing matchup against Class 3 power Maplewood-Richmond Heights on Friday at the Field House.

"Fredericktown came in and really competed," Sikeston coach Gregg Holifield said. "I thought they played as hard as any team we've gone against this year. They did some good things. It's a nice road win. Any time you go on the road and pull off a victory, it's good."

The Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-10 first quarter lead and had built a 30-12 second quarter advantage, but the Blackcats would not go away quietly.

Fredericktown (6-6) trimmed the lead to 34-22 at its closest point, before the Bulldogs settled for a 36-22 halftime lead.

Sikeston put the game away with a 23-6 run in the third quarter and enforced the mercy clock in the fourth.

"They're good athletes. They're good players. They play hard. They're just good. That's what happened," Fredericktown coach Eric Thompson said. "They've just got a lot of people and we didn't have the inside presence to be able to rebound with them. I don't know if the pressure hurt us as much as the offensive rebounds."

The Bulldogs finished with 44 rebounds, 24 of which came on the offensive end.

Bulldog senior Vashawn Ruffin led all scorers with 20 points to go with his seven rebounds, seven steals and four assists.

Reese Porter followed up with 13 points. J.T. Jones added eight points and nine rebounds.

The Bulldogs finished with 21 assists and 12 turnovers. They were 6 of 17 (35 percent) from 3-point range and were 30 of 66 (45 percent) overall from the field. Sikeston forced 22 Blackcat turnovers.
