Charleston advances to next round in Superman Classic

METROPOLIS, Ill. -- The Charleston Bluejays easily took care of their first opponent in the 30th Annual Superman Classic Monday at Massac County High School.

The Bluejays, the tournament's No. 1 seed, defeated Century, Ill., 86-43.

Getting three full days of rest, Charleston will play Madison, Ill., on Friday during the semifinals of the winner's bracket. Madison defeated Meridian, Ill., 70-60 later Monday night.

FRESHMAN BASKETBALL

Sikeston 67, NMCC 31

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs' freshman team continued their unbeaten streak Monday against New Madrid County Central during a 67-31 win.

Dominique Dyes led Sikeston (7-0) with 14 points. Antonio Bennett added 13 while Earnest Fobbs and Cedric McIntyre each chipped in 12 and 10 respectively.

NMCC was led by Chris Farr's 14.

SCC 87, Caruthersville 24

CARUTHERSVILLE -- Fresh off claiming the Scott-Mississippi Conference championship, the Scott County Central Bravettes returned to the floor Monday and routed Caruthersville 87-24.

Scott Central jumped out to a 31-5 lead after the first quarter and by halftime held a 51-point advantage.

Mikaela Blissett collected a game-high 31 points through the first three quarters to finish with over 30 points for the second-straight game. Johniqua Fort had 24 points in the contest.

Now at 8-4, Scott Central will play East Prairie tonight at 6 p.m.

Charleston 57, Portageville 49

PORTAGEVILLE -- Surviving a third push by Portageville, the Charleston Lady Bluejays picked up their 10th win of the season Monday, 57-49.

The Lady Bulldogs held a one-point lead after the first quarter only to see Charleston outscore them 16-9 in the second to take a six-point halftime lead.

Portageville scored 13 points in the third quarter to close their deficit to only two points entering the final frame. They were outscored 14-8 in the final eight minutes as the Lady Bluejays held on for the win.

Juwanna Walker had 19 points to lead Charleston while Sierra Frazier was close behind with 17 points, including a pair of 3-pointers.

For the Lady Bulldogs, Taylor McCoy and Jennifer Ifland had 19 and 11 points respectively.

Now at 10-4, Charleston will host New Madrid County Central Thursday at 6 p.m.
