SHAWNEE, Kan. -- Gene Ellen Rogers Maclay, 86, died at 5:50 p.m. Jan. 27, 2013, at The Sweet Life Care Center in Shawnee.

Born Oct. 23, 1926, in Dorena, Mo., to the late Webb Jones Rogers and John Dallas Rogers, she lived in Dorena and Charleston, Mo., most of her life. She graduated from Charleston High School and later taught in several of the Mississippi County rural schools. She moved to Washington, D.C., where she was employed at the Pentagon. She graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a bachelor's degree in education. In 1968, she and her husband moved to Powell Butte, Ore., where they owned a cattle ranch and she taught at Powell Butte School. She substituted in Mississippi County schools, was active in D.A.R., a member of P.E.O., a lifetime member of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society and the Charleston United Methodist Church.

In Portland, Ore., she married William Dorsey "Bill" Maclayand who preceded her in death in 2001.

She was also preceded in death by a son, William Rogers Maclay, in 1983.

Surviving are: one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ellen and Gary Weaver of Shawnee; and one granddaughter, Laura Ann Weaver, a student at the University of Hong Kong.

Visitation is scheduled from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Charleston United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dan Faust, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery under the direction of the McMikle Funeral Home.

Pallbearers are: Mike Bryant, JonJo Bryant, Kenny Kindle, Larry French, Tripp Logan and Smith DeLine.

Honorary pallbearers are: Leslie Fox, Jackie Barker, Paul William Hill and Eddie Murr.
