BLOOMFIELD -- Watching a late lead escape them, fourth-seeded Portageville fell 56-54 to fifth-seed South Pemiscot on Monday in the opening round of the Class 2, District 1 Tournament.

"We just missed so many easy shots around the basket tonight," Portageville head coach Jason Irby said. "We had a lot of opportunities when we had a two to four lead to stretch it. The ball just seemed to find a way to bounce the wrong way."

Both teams struggled shooting all night, but it was Portageville who held their biggest lead of the night, 47-43, with 5:30 left in regulation.

That advantage was quickly stolen when an unanswered layup, followed by a 3-pointer allowed South Pemiscot to move ahead by a point with 2:06 remaining.

Portageville's final lead came 30 seconds later when a pair of free throws from Dominique Walker shifted the one-point advantage their way.

A put-back from Collin Gilmore was followed by a pair of free throws, however, to put South Pemiscot back in control, 52-49, with 1:09 to play.

Walker scored in the paint to close Portageville within a point on their next possession, but were forced to foul soon after as South Pemiscot attempted to run out the clock.

South Pemiscot went 4 for 6 on their next three trips to the line while getting a key rebounds to extend their lead to five points with 12 seconds remaining.

A 3-pointer from Ben Story with only four seconds left on the clock gave Portageville some life as they closed back to within two points.

South Pemiscot was able to seal the win when one final steal attempt on the base line by Portageville was narrowly averted, allowing them to run out the clock.

"Our offensive execution could have been better," South Pemiscot head coach Aaron Bidewell said. "But against a fantastic, athletic team like they are you have to take what you can get as far as buckets go.

"As far as our defense and rebounding goes, we didn't block out a few times when we needed to in the first half. Besides that, our execution was pretty good."

A large portion of credit for South Pemiscot's win goes to the team's effort at the charity stripe. They hit 18 of 23 (78 percent) while going a perfect 10 of 10 on free throws in the first half.

"We really struggled at the beginning of the year with that," Bidewell said. "I think we were at like 50 percent as far as free throws go. Our kids came in focused to work on it. A few beat me to the gym today, so I'm just happy today as far as them getting up here and shooting as well as they did."

Four South Pemiscot scorers reached double-digits on the night with Anthony Primer scoring 16 points to lead the way. Logan Carter had 13 points while Jacob Trammell and Seth Harris scored 11 and 10 points respectively.

In his final game for Portageville, Walker contributed a game-high 23 points, including 13 points alone in the first quarter.

"We had a lot of opportunities around the basket," Irby said. "We didn't finish and had loose balls we couldn't corral. In a close game like that you have to have those."

Portageville finished the year at 13-11, but much sooner than they'd had hoped. They'll lose nine seniors to graduation.

"We had kind of an up and down year," Irby said. "Not the year I thought we'd have, but I'm proud of them for persevering through. We had a good group of kids as far as effort and they just fell a little short tonight."

South Pemiscot moves on to face the top-seeded Hayti Indians on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the semifinals.
