Ruffin, Jones among media all-state picks

SIKESTON -- The Missouri media all-state basketball teams were released today and once again Southeast Missouri was well represented.

Topping the list on the boy's side is a pair of Sikeston Bulldogs in Vashawn Ruffin and J.T. Jones. Ruffin earned first-team honors in Class 4 while Jones was selected for the second-team.

Other locals making the cut include Charleston's Michael Hull and New Madrid County Central's Willie Jimerson on the first-team in Class 3 while Hull's teammate, Ryan Parham, made the second-team.

In Class 2, Oran's Alex Heuring was selected for the first-team after guiding the Eagles on their recent final four run. Scott County Central's Larandis Banks and Risco's Jordon Pavy were selected for the first and second-teams respectively in Class 1.

On the girls side Dexter's Brittany Harris finished her Lady Bearcats career with first-team honors in Class 4.

Charleston's E'Neikqua Ewing and New Madrid County Central's Benesha Childress are Class 3 second-team selections while Scott Central's Mikaela Blissett earned first team honors in Class 1.

Scott Central's Ann Dennis made the Class 1 second-team.

Both the boys and girls team were selected by a statewide panel of Missouri sportswriters and broadcasters.

GOLF

FARMINGTON -- The Sikeston Bulldogs golf team came in third during the Farmington Invitational Tournament.

As a team, Sikeston finished with a 317 behind tournament winners Notre Dame (309) and Jackson (314) to round out the top three.

Dexter finished with a 363.

Kirk Hoggatt finished second overall individually while Gabe Wheeler tied for third.

BASEBALL

Risco 10, Scott Central 9

RISCO -- After battling back from a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning Wednesday the Risco Tigers pulled out a 10-9 win over Scott County Central in extra innings.

Trailing 7-4 in the final frame the Tigers found new life in the form of a three-run home run from Matt Cumins to tie things up. The Braves answered with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning to retake the lead, but quickly saw things go south once again.

In the bottom of the eighth Risco cut their deficit back down to a run on a fielder's choice before putting runners on second and third with two outs.

Brandon Bixler hit a line drive to center field that proved to be a walk-off double that gave the Tigers a 10-9 win.

Leading Risco's effort was Cumins, who reached in all five plate appearances. He had two home runs and pair of walks while driving in six runs. Hunter Knight and Josh Earnheart had two hits each.

Tyler Masters had two hits for Scott Central, including a double.

Now at 3-5 on the season, Risco will host Delta C-& today at 4:30 p.m.

Notre Dame 4, Dexter 2

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Stephen Brennan belted a triple and went 2 for 2 at the plate Wednesday as the Notre Dame baseball team defeated visiting Dexter 4-2 to remain unbeaten on the season.

Pitcher Justin Landewee picked up his third win of the season. He threw a complete-game three-hitter with 11 strikeouts and two walks.Luke Haines also went 2 for 2 while Chase Simmons added two hits for the Bulldogs (9-0).

Dexter will host the Scott City Rams today at 4 p.m.
