CHARLESTON -- The Charleston Squirrels advanced to the semifinals of the Senior Babe Ruth state baseball tournament Sunday following a 12-1 win over the SEMO Strokers of Oran at Hillhouse Park in Charleston.

The Squirrels take on Boonville today at 2:30 p.m. with the winner of that game playing Tuesday at 6 p.m. for the state championship.

Charleston took an early 2-0 lead after the first inning but the Strokers cut that advantage in half after the bottom of the second inning by pushing their lone run across.

The 2-1 score stood until the fifth inning when the Squirrels exploded for 10 runs to put the game out of reach. Charleston totaled 16 hits as a team.

Caleb McCord got the win on the mound for Charleston while Chance Tenkhoff took the loss for the Strokers.

Ryan Fortner went 4 for 4 at the plate for Charleston while Tyler Anderson followed with three hits of his own, including a double. Chase Young and Cody Payne each added two hits apiece while Ian Householder also hit a double for the Squirrels.

Alex Heuring led Oran with two hits, one being a triple.

Following a lengthy rain delay, the Strokers started an elimination game against Mineral Area late Sunday night.

After falling behind by an early 3-0 deficit, the Strokers bounced back to take a 7-3 lead after four innings. However, a second rain/lightning delay near midnight forced the game to be postponed until today at 1 p.m.

The winner of that game will play the Poplar Bluff Thunder at 5 p.m. today.
