No. 5 Portageville upsets fourth-seeded Holcomb 62-54

BLOOMFIELD (SMNS) - The No. 5 seeded Portageville Bulldogs beat the No. 4 seeded Holcomb Hornets 62-54 to account for the only quarterfinal upset at the Class 2, District 1, boys basketball tournament Monday.

Portageville trailed 45-42 at the start of the fourth quarter. The contest was tied 49-49 with four minutes remaining. The Bulldogs scored the next nine points to move ahead 58-49 with less than two minutes remaining and led by at least four the rest of the way.

Derrick Priggle scored 10 of his team-high 14 points for Portageville in the first half. A.V. Banks scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half and Carlos McGee tallied nine of his 11 points after halftime.

The Bulldogs shot just 12 of 21 from the free throw line but made nine free throws in the fourth quarter.

Ryan Reeves hit a 2-pointer in ever quarter. He paced Holcomb with 25 points.

Chance Davis tallied all 16 of his points before the start of the fourth quarter.

Portageville will play top-seeded Bernie Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a district semifinal.
