PREP ROUNDUP: Risco drops to Bernie, Lady Jays take down East Prairie

HOLCOMB -- The Risco Tigers lost its opening round game of the Holcomb Invitational tournament Monday falling to Bernie 57-38.

Risco, the eighth seed, was led by Luke Simmons' 14 points. Drew Fortner scored nine.

Matt Vernon led the top-seeded Mules with 18 points. Brandson Sparks added 12.

Risco will play in the consolation bracket today at 4:30 p.m.

CHARLESTON -- Juwanna Walker scored 23 points to lead the Charleston Lady Bluejays past East Prairie 69-21 Monday.

Sierra Frazier added 17 points and Cheyenne Randle chipped in 16 for Charleston (2-0).

Sikeston 62, Jackson 32

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston 8th grade boys basketball team won its home opener on Monday night, defeating Jackson 62-32.

Sikeston led 22-13 after one quarter and only held a 31-25 lead at the half.

But the Bulldogs (2-0) out-scored Jackson 31-7 in the second half to stretch the lead to an insurmountable margin.

"We came out with great energy in the first quarter but we had some foul trouble that hindered us," Sikeston coach Derek James said. "But with that is a chance for other kids to step up and contribute and that's exactly what happened. This was a great team win and everybody contributed."

Sikeston was led by Elijah Faulkner's 21 points. Nate Self and Kevin Jones each contributed 10 points.

Sikeston's 8th grade team will host Poplar Bluff on Thursday at the Sikeston Field House at 5:30 followed by the freshman Bulldogs.

Sikeston led 24-20 at the half but were outscored by 13 in the second half. Peyton Howard led Sikeston with 24 points.
