SIKESTON -- Sikeston Department of Public Works equipment purchases received the green light from the Sikeston City Council members during the Council's regular monthly meeting Monday.

Jay Lancaster, public works director for the city, said he had held off on some purchases to see how the fiscal year went but having passed the halfway point, he recommended the city replace one of its two large tractors, the Parks Division skid steer loader and the Department of Public Works administrative vehicle.

The large tractor is a piece of equipment used on a daily basis, according to Lancaster, for everything from mowing to operating the city's leaf collection machines. The tractor to be replaced is 15 year old, according to Lancaster.

This tractor will be a four-wheel drive model, however, rather than two-wheel drive so it can be used for ditch maintenance and will have a cab for use during inclement weather.

Council authorized Lancaster to seek bids from local vendors as he advised that is where they will get the best price.

Council members then authorized the purchase of a tracked skid steer loader for the Parks Division for $45,101.70 through a state contract bid.

The skid steer loader will replace a 15-year-old wheeled model, according to Lancaster, with advanced hydraulics that can operate attachments such as a blacktop milling tool and a jack hammer.
