Silver Sox split doubleheader with Jackson

SIKESTON -- Luke Williams drove in five runs on three singles helping the Sikeston Silver Sox Senior Legion baseball team to a 6-5 win over Jackson Senior Legion on Saturday during the first game of a doubleheader at VFW Memorial Stadium in Sikeston.

Jackson won the second game 6-5.

Williams hit a two-RBI single to center that scored both Hunter Copeland and Trent Pobst to give the Silver Sox a quick lead in the first inning of the first game. Nathan Hampton later made it 3-0 that same inning with a single that scored Colton Hampton.

After Jackson pulled within one run after the top of the second, Sikeston tacked on two more runs in its half of the second. Another two-RBI single from Williams gave Sikeston a 5-2 lead.

The Silver Sox (5-1) picked up its sixth run in the bottom of the fourth after Williams' third single of the game. Jackson pulled within a run in the fifth after scoring two but couldn't tie it.

Jackson managed to put the tying run on second in the top of the fifth with two outs but a groundout by Nathan Hurst ended the game.

Jordan Kluesner earned the save pitching 1/3 of an inning while Jordan Griggs picked up the win after 6 2/3. Griggs gave up five runs on 11 hits and two walks. He also struck out three on 105 pitches.

Jackson's Gavin Turner got the loss after six innings and 100 pitches. He gave up five runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out four.

In the second game, Sikeston squandered a 2-1 lead in the top of the third allowing Jackson to score four runs and take a 5-2 advantage. The Silver Sox managed to tie the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth after a solo home run by Williams.

Jackson's Ben Maudie, who went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, drove in the winning run in the top of the sixth with a single to that scored Ryan Harvey.

Trent Pobst led Sikeston at the plate with three hits, including two doubles and two RBIs.

Nathan Hurst earned the win on the mound after four innings. He gave up five of Sikeston's nine hits, walked four and struck out 1. Jay Newel pitched three innings of relief.

Nathan Hampton was Sikeston's losing pitcher after six innings and 117 pitches. He gave up 11 of Jackson's 12 hits, six runs (four earned) and walked four.
