Third grade students at Southeast Elementary in Sikeston decided to help others in need after reading a story called "Here's My Dollar," written by Gary Soto. The story is about a young girl who helped out the San Diego Zoo by writing a letter to the local newspaper and sending a dollar as a donation. Because of her efforts, donations started to pour in from local residents and businesses across the country and overseas. After reading this story, Keyth Blissett's third grade students decided to do the same by bringing in extra pocket change over several weeks. The students raised over $80 and after hearing about their teacher's time packing meals for starving children, the class decided to donate the money to "Feed My Starving Children." The class watched an online video to educate themselves on the cause and to find out what their donation could do. The money they donated will provide enough meals for a child every day for an entire year. Blissett said he was pleased the students were making a connection to the story.
