Officials will mull property valuations

Friday, July 3, 2015

CHARLESTON -- Unless something changes, Mississippi County Commission members will be meeting toward the end of the month to rule on property valuation appeals and nuisance violations.

The Board of Adjustments will begin considering appeals of the County Assessor Office's property valuations at 9 a.m. July 20, County Clerk Junior DeLay advised the Commission during their regular weekly meeting Thursday.

With a vacancy in the County Surveyor Office, the BOE this year will have only five members: the three County Commissioners and two citizens appointed by the Commission.

"We do have some appeals for property assessments," DeLay said. "Last time the BOE met, you appointed Richard Sutton and John Tucker."

"We'll start by seeing who is interested in it," Carlin Bennett, presiding county commissioner, said. "We'll have the appointments made by the 17th (of July)."

The 2015 tax cycle is reviewing agricultural land values for reassessment. Agricultural land is assessed and placed into one of six categories in Missouri based on the ground's potential productivity.

Following her reassessments and sending impact notices out, County Assessor Lisa Norton received four appeals this year, according to DeLay.

"Have they even spoken to Lisa?" Bennett asked. "Normally this resolves before it ever gets to us."
