SIKESTON -- The Poplar Bluff tennis team was the first to five wins Wednesday defeating Sikeston during the Class 2, District 1 team tournament at the Sikeston High School tennis courts.

The fourth-seeded Lady Mules (6-12) swept the three doubles matches then scored two victories in singles to advance to the tournament semifinals. They fell to top-seeded Jackson later in the day.

No. 5 Sikeston ended its team season with a record of 2-13 but will take part in the singles tournament on Friday at Farmington with a start time of 9 a.m.

"Our season as a team is over and now we move on to individual play," Sikeston tennis coach Russ Dial said. "We played to the best of our abilities today against Poplar Bluff. Unfortunately, it wasn't good enough. We were in such a deep hole going into the singles portion of the dual match that we couldn't afford to lose one of the remaining matches. I will say we were in each doubles match at the beginning, but toward the end of each match our mental focus broke down and the unforced errors began to increase. That cost us our season."
