SD ROUNDUP: Sikeston tennis edged by Poplar Bluff, Dexter volleyball falls to Jackson

SIKESTON -- Poplar Bluff pulled out a narrow 5-4 victory over Sikeston on the road Thursday at the Sikeston High School Tennis Courts in Sikeston for their first victory of the season.

The Mules picked up three singles wins and won 2 of 3 in doubles action to edge the host Bulldogs.

Poplar Bluff (1-1) will travel to Arcadia Valley today. Sikeston (0-3) will have its first road match Aug. 30, in Caruthersville.

DEXTER, Mo. -- Amy Dai and Jordan Maxton were the lone victors for the Tigers in the road loss to the undefeated Bearcats.

Cape Central fell to 1-2 while Dexter improved to 3-0.

Chaffee 2, Jefferson (Festus) 1

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- A two-RBI double by Madeline Hendrix turned out to be the game-winner during Chaffee's first win of the season.

Hendrix smacked her only hit of the game in the fourth inning erasing a 1-0 Jefferson lead.

Kylie Wilhite earned the pitching win after four innings giving up one run on four hits and three walks with one strikeout. Carlie Milz pitched three no-hit innings of relief.

Chaffee (1-2) will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Poplar Bluff.

ELLSINORE, Mo. -- Alyssa Moore doubled to get the only extra-base hit of the game as the Hawks notched their second win of the season on the road and dealt the host Redbirds their first loss.

Alyssa Tidwell went the distance to clinch the win for Kelly (2-0). She recorded two strikeouts and walked two batters.

Andrea Kearbey pitched a complete game to take the loss for East Carter County (1-1). She allowed one earned run and struck out three.

Kelly hosts Neelyville today.

VOLLEYBALL

Jackson 2, Dexter 1

JACKSON, Mo. -- Hannah Hunt recorded 10 kills and 13 digs as the Indians clinched their first win of the season in a three-set thriller over the Class 3 perennial powerhouse Bearcats 19-25, 29-27 and 25-21.

Olivia Wendel slammed seven kills and Olivia Hallet nailed six kills for Jackson (1-1). Malary Burger dished out 15 assists and had eight digs for the Indians while Lainey Broussard contributed 10 assists and Hannah Wilson notched 18 digs.

"The girls played as a team and really battled for each point," Jackson head coach Tracy Robinson said. "We never gave up and our solid defense led to a strong offensive attack."

Dexter dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

JV -- Dexter won 25-21, 20-25, 27-25
