Recruitment days for local Boy Scout packs are planned

SIKESTON -- "We want you!" -- is headlined in large, bold letters on the Boy Scouts of America's homepage, lighting a fire for this year's Scout recruitment.

When it comes to extracurricular activities, sports inarguably dominates the attention of most youngsters, but for Scouts, it's not about competition -- it's about cooperation.

"To be a Scout means caring about yourself, your family, your friends and of course your community. Scouts make a difference and leave a positive impact," said Cherokee District Executive D'Angelo Ramos. "Every parent wants their kids to grow up and be responsible productive members of their community. Scouting lays that foundation and we do that having fun."

There are three Boy Scout packs in Sikeston, but only two will be recruiting. Both packs are recruiting at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 1, but in different locations.

According to Cubmaster Lynn Hasty, students from Lee Hunter Elementary to St. Francis Xavier are recommended to recruit at First United Methodist Church for Pack 41, ran by Cubmaster Frank Masterson; and students from Mathews Elementary to Southeast Elementary are recommended to recruit at First Christian Church for Pack 59, ran by Hasty.

"We're really trying to recruit Cubbies (first through fifth graders) but all boys are welcome to come and check out the recruitment," Hasty said. "I think this is a really good program."

The signup location they go to will be the pack they are registered to.
