Sikeston blanks CHS

CARUTHERSVILLE - The Sikeston girls tennis team defeated Caruthersville on Thursday 9-0 to improve to 2-1 on the season.

The Lady Bulldogs dominated the Lady Tigers in every match, winning most by 8-1 or 8-0 margins.

"They're kind of down this year," said Sikeston head coach Suzanne Hart. "I would've liked to have had a stronger opponent to get tuned up for Jackson on Tuesday. But the whole team played well. They didn't take them lightly. They went out, took care of business and did it quickly."

In singles, No. 1 Elizabeth Killion beat Tracy Stewart 8-1; No. 2 Lindsay Leible beat Leslie Erickson 8-4; No. 3 Heather Hester beat Courtney Taylor 8-0; No. 4 Valerie Haman beat Ginny Dorrah 8-1; No. 5 Erin Shelton beat Tara Pylate 8-0; and Kellee Manley beat Jessica Hutchinson 8-0.

In doubles, Killion and Leible beat Stewart and Taylor 8-1; Hester and Shelton beat Erickson and Anna Landsdale 8-0; and Haman and Manley beat Dorrah and Pylate 8-1.

In junior varsity action, Sikeston's Rachel Colwick and Leslie Powell each won their matches 6-0. They also teamed up for a doubles win 6-2. Also in doubles, Madeline Bucher and Charlie Richey won 6-1.

Sikeston plays host to Jackson on Tuesday at 4 p.m. They will travel to Poplar Bluff on Thursday at 4 p.m.

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Charleston Lady Bluejays tennis team got back on the winning track by defeating Carbondale on the road.

After losing a disappointing match earlier in the week to Dexter, Charleston head coach Mitch Baker said it wasn't hard to motivate the team.

"We were all disappointed in the loss to Dexter -- it was a hard loss," said Baker. "But sometimes a loss will light a fire under you. I was extremely pleased with the way they responded. I was proud of the whole team."

In singles, Charleston's No. 1 Emily McDowell beat Cecile Mayberry 10-6; No. 2 Britt Story beat Nicole Roberts 10-6; No. 3 Mindi Leuhmann beat Sarah Jackson 10-3; and No. 4 Cortney McClendon beat Marian Summers 10-4.

In doubles, McDowell and Luehmann beat Mayberry and Jackson 10-6 and Story and McClendon beat Roberts and Hannah Webber 10-3.

Emily Rolwing and Ashley Barnhill dropped their doubles match to Summers and Katie Grace 5-10.

In singles, Rolwing lost to Emily Maroney 2-10 and Barnhill lost to Grace 6-10.

"Carbondale is an extremely talented team," said Baker. "It was great to see my No. 2 doubles play well. All top four singles played well. Cortney McClendon, that's the best she's played all year. It's definitely a good win but there's still room for improvement."

Charleston's junior varsity winners were Summer Groves, Claire Showmaker, Megan Leuhmann and Lauren Smith. In doubles, Libby Renaud and Heather Ludwig won their match.

Charleston (2-1) will play at Cape Central on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
