Speakout 8/17

Tuesday, August 17, 2004

I was in line at a local convenience store here in Sikeston on Tuesday after lunch. In front of me was a car from a local Christian daycare with the name of the daycare and decorations painted on the car. It truly saddened me to see a case of beer handed out of the window of the store to the driver of the daycare's car. I certainly hope that no children from the daycare were cruising around with this driver. If this is the type of people that are leading children at this Christian daycare, I know my children will never follow in their footsteps. Simply disgusting.

This is concerning "Change the rules," which was published in the July 29 SpeakOut. I agree that we have some wonderful girls in the area with excellent horsemanship skills. But you need to think long and hard because, yes, it is the Junior and Miss Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo, but it is also the Sikeston Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo. So would the contestants in the rodeo need to be from the area too? I don't think so. Our rodeo is one of the top 10 largest outdoor rodeos in the United States. I say, the more contestants, the better. That way you know whoever wins really did deserve it.

Why do we have to wait until 3 or 4 p.m. every day on William Street to get our paper? What is the problem. People in these big-shot neighborhoods get theirs as soon as the come off the printer. It has been this way for as long as I can remember. We in my neighborhood are going to drop our paper unless we can start getting it at an earlier time of the day. I know they are ready at 11 a.m. and people are delivering at 11 a.m. and there are a bunch of people who deliver. Why can't they get the papers on the west side between Murray Lane and William Street. I would like an answer.

There is no difference on delivery times for various areas in the City of Sikeston. Delivery of the paper is done by contract carriers and they deliver the papers as soon as they get them rolled or rain-bagged, whichever is necessary any given day. As far as you knowing when the paper comes off the press, you are smarter than anyone here, because there is no guarantee what time the paper comes off, due to a number of different reasons. Anyway, no one gets their paper by 11 a.m., except possibly on Wednesdays when a larger group of employees are here to disseminate them. Notice the delivery guarantee time on page 2 of our paper. If you haven't received your paper by 6 p.m., call 471-1137.

This is in response to the way people dress when they go to church. I don't particularly care for people wearing shorts or short-short dresses, but do you think God would honestly turn people away if they're really there and all He wants is for them to accept Him and worship Him? Do you think Jesus would appreciate Jesus would turn somebody away? I know poor people are intimidated. They don't go to church because they don't have the "proper" clothing that others think they should wear. I'm sorry, but I disagree. You're supposed to go to church to worship God and not be on a pedestal for everybody to look at or to be in a fashion show.

I've always been under the impression that the church or place of worship is not a place of fashion. What do you think about the Amish? They mostly wear black or dark colors to church. Do you think their clothes are too blah?

I Samuel 16:7 says that God doesn't look at our outward appearance. If we really wanted to look like they did in the Bible, we would wear robes and sandals and stuff. People who judge others because of what they wear should really be checking themselves.
