Charleston walks by Scott Central
MORLEY - With 12 runs in the top of the first inning, that would be all the Charleston Bluejays baseball team would need on Wednesday against Scott County Central.
The Bluejays didn't score again as they defeated the Braves 12-1 by the 10-run mercy rule in five innings in a Scott-Mississippi Conference game.
"It was nice to come out and get off to a big start early," said Charleston head coach Chris Stanfield.
"We always talk about starting fast. It actually paid off for us. Granted, we didn't do much the rest of the ballgame and the kids may have felt they had enough. But it was nice to get out to a fast start."
The Bluejays only needed six hits in the game as the Scott Central pitching staff had trouble finding the strike zone.
Charleston's first five batters of the game walked.
In all, Scott Central walked nine batters and hit another.
Bluejay hurler Marcus Dixon was the winning pitcher, throwing all five innings and allowing one unearned run off one hit. He struck out seven and walked two.
"He struggled a little bit early with the mound, but once he got past that and got settled in, he started throwing better," said Stanfield.
"He just needs innings right now. We need him and Travis McCann, Rett Thompson and A.H. Marshall to get going for districts. I like our chances if we have those four ready to go. I know (assistant coach) Michael (Minner) will have them ready."
Dixon also led the team with two hits and an RBI. Matt Jackson had a bases clearing triple in the first inning.
A.H. Marshall had a two-run single and Josh Marshall and Stephen Hicks each had one hit with one RBI.
Josh Woods was the losing pitcher for the Braves.
Chris Dudley had the only hit for Scott Central in a pinch hitting role.
Tyler Griffin threw four scoreless innings of relief for the Braves.
Charleston (8-5, 2-1 Scott-Miss.) will host Puxico today at 4 p.m.
