John Cowell
CAPE GIRARDEAU - John R. Cowell, 82, formerly of St. Louis, died at 8:20 a.m. Dec. 10, 2003, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Born June 13, 1921, in Charleston, son of the late Charley Eugene and Lois Clayton Cowell, he was a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II and served in battles in Central Europe. Before retiring, he was a truck driver and dispatcher for Jones Truck Line in St. Louis. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he was a resident at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
On Oct. 24, 1937, in Caruthersville, he married Josephine Halter who preceded him in death on May 4, 2002.
Survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, John R. "Sonny" and Joan Cowell Jr. of Sikeston and Terry Wayne Cowell of St. Louis; one daughter, Sharyn Kay Cowell of St. Louis; and five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
One sister also preceded him in death.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. Saturday until service time at 11 a.m. at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston. Bishop Michael Comer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will officiate.
The Missouri Military Funeral Honor Guard will conduct graveside military rites at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston.
