Area to have chance to salute local talent

By any definition, Neal Boyd is a big man. Large in size but also large in reputation, Boyd has carved a national following with his talented operatic tenor voice. He has stood proudly on the stage of Carnegie Hall in New York City, the mecca of his musical field. And for a young kid from Sikeston, that ain't bad folks.

Sikeston area residents will get a rare chance to hear Neal Boyd perform here on Saturday, Aug. 3. A group of local supporters is hosting a concert and reception to showcase Boyd's unique skills and to raise money to assist in his ongoing education and training. The evening will offer a special opportunity for Sikeston to salute this outstanding talented musician and Sikeston native.

All too often society is guilty of shining the spotlight on sports heroes or others while paying only passing attention to those unique artists among us. But Boyd's journey to Carnegie Hall places him in a very special position and area residents should recognize the notoriety and attention he brings to our community and our region. His skills are equal to or greater than anyone who has called Sikeston home. To hear his lyrical voice and magical vocal range should be a rare treat indeed.

Tickets for the concert are available by calling 471-2715 or by mail at Neal E. Boyd in Concert, P.O. Box 428, Sikeston. General admission is $25 and sponsor tickets are two for $100. A sponsor reception will follow the concert. The concert is scheduled for the First United Methodist Church. The reception will be held at the new Clinton Building in the Sports Complex. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

Neal Boyd is a treasure for this community. He has already proven his talent on the national stage. We can't help but wonder just how far this outstanding young man will take those talents. And in the process, Neal Boyd will help to put Sikeston on the map. We couldn't be more proud.
