SHS soccer team notches 1-0 win over Kennett

KENNETT - The Sikeston Bulldog soccer team improved to 4-12-1 on the season with a 1-0 overtime road victory against Kennett on Thursday.

Tanner Fritz scored the game-winning goal two minutes into overtime to win the game.

"He scored on a free kick -- it was a set play," said Sikeston head coach Derrick Long. "He just hit a little bender around their wall and hit it in the upper 90 of the corner. It was a nice shot and he came up big for us. We've worked on that in practice and it worked this time in the game. It's good that he scored it, he hit a few off the crossbar today and their keeper made some really tough saves. But Tanner deserved it."

The Bulldogs dominated the Indians in every aspect of the game, out-shooting them 29-2. Goalkeeper Jason Deere made both saves for the Bulldogs.

"I'd say 95 percent of the match we were on their half of the field," said Long. "We passed the ball good and we had control, but lately we've had a hard time scoring. The goal's looking the size of a shoe box right now. When you out-shoot your opponent 29-2, you know you dominated the game. But our wins are few and far between so anytime you can get one you've got to be happy."

Sikeston will be off until Oct. 28 when they play at Poplar Bluff at 4 p.m.

The Sikeston junior varsity improved to 5-5-2 on the season with a 6-0 victory against Kennett.

Kyle Howard, Ryan Davis, Sam Klimmek and Chris Matthews all scored goals in the first half to lead 4-0. They were assisted by Tyler Powell, Howard, Jordan Dillender and Cody Black.

In the second half, Black scored a goal on an assist from Powell. Matthews scored the final goal unassisted.

The junior varsity will play in a Cape Girardeau tournament on Monday at 6 p.m. versus Cape Central.
