Vester Guthrie

EAST PRAIRIE - Vester Lorene Guthrie, 83, died at 5:05 p.m. Jan. 12, 2003, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.

Born Nov. 6, 1919, in Marshall County, Ala., daughter of the late Syera Sanders and Rosie Bell Helton Guffey, she was engaged in farming with her husband prior to moving to East Prairie. A member of the Free Holiness Church in Swearengin, Ala., she attended Southside General Baptist Church in Charleston and was a home care worker until her retirement.

On Oct. 10, 1936, she married James Thomas Guthrie who preceded her in death on Sept. 10, 1982.

Survivors include: three sons and daughters-in-law, Nathern Sanders and Mary Guthrie of Charleston, James Leon Guthrie and Tony Clay and Brenda Guthrie of East Prairie; seven daughters and two sons-in-law, Hester Suana Guthrie, Mary Katherine Haley and Ruby Lorene and Bob Jones of East Prairie, Virginia Galor Elizabeth Wilson of Puxico, Sarah Lillie Ruth Rhyne of Swearengin, Shirley Leona Howton of Scottsboro, Ala., and Patricia Donett and Joe Day of Fenton; one brother, Hayden Guffey of Hazel Green, Ala.; five sisters, Serena Groves, Bonnie Stapler and Dollie Phillips of Swearengin, Louise Foster of Glenoma, Wash., and Bertha Guffey of Owens Crossroads, Ala.; and 46 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Franklin Guthrie; three brothers, one sister, several half brothers and half sisters and three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation is from 5 p.m. today until service time at 7 p.m. at Shelby Funeral Home. Bill Meeks will officiate.

Visitation will continue Wednesday evening at the Scottsboro Funeral Home, where services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday.

Burial will follow in the New Prospect Cemetery in Alabama.
