Kelly posts third straight win

PERRYVILLE - The Kelly Hawks won their third straight game with a 7-3 victory against Class 1A No. 2 ranked St. Vincent on Wednesday.

"It's always good to pick up a win like that," said Kelly head coach John Gant. "Our bats were kind of quiet and have been the last couple of games, but we played well defensively and got the runs we needed to get the win."

Kelly's Tyler Schlosser picked up the win, throwing 5 2/3 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) off five hits and five walks with six strikeouts.

Chase Deason pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts to pick up the save.

"It was a good game for Schlosser," said Gant. "He got in trouble a couple times but was able to get out of it. I saw some good positive things out of him. This is the second time Chase has gotten some good relief innings for us."

Dustin Deshaney led the Hawks offensively, going 2-4 with a double. Drew Moore was 1-2 with a triple and two RBIs.

Kelly (3-4) will compete in the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday.

"Of our first four losses, we were up late in all of those games but couldn't close it out," said Gant. "We played some strong teams but there wasn't one that we couldn't compete with. We're figuring out how to win now."

CHARLESTON - The Charleston Bluejays continued its winning streak on Wednesday with a 15-9 victory against Oak Ridge.

The Bluejays have won four straight to improve to 5-3 on the season.

"We swung the bats real well," said Charleston head coach Brent Anderson. "We've got a lot to work on, we're a relatively young group and we're still learning game by game. I want us to cut down on some of the mental mistakes we're making right now."

Travis McCann started on the mound for the Bluejays, pitching four innings and allowing eight runs (three earned) off six hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

Marcus Dixon picked up the win in relief, allowing one unearned run in two innings with one strikeout and no hits allowed. Dixon has won four of the Bluejays' five games.

A.H. Marshall pitched one scoreless inning, striking out two.

Charleston was led by Ryan Ford who was 3-5 with two RBIs. Dixon went 2-2 with three runs and three RBIs. He was also hit three times.

Rhett Thompson, McCann and Dustin Smoot each had one hit. McCann had two RBIs and Thompson had one.

Oak Ridge pitchers hit seven batters and walked nine.

"We're doing a lot of good things offensively," said Anderson. "We've just got to learn to catch the dang thing and throw it. And we're giving up too many walks so we've got to start throwing some strikes."

Charleston will play at Portageville on Friday at 4 p.m.

DEXTER - The Dexter Bearcats got back on the winning track with a 7-3 win against Twin Rivers.

The Bearcats pounded out 12 hits, led by Eric Bowling's two-run home run in the fifth inning to make the score 6-2.

"We hit the ball well as a team today against a good pitcher," said Dexter head coach Brian Becker. "Bowling continues to drive the ball and I was really proud with the lower part of our lineup. Our eight and nine hitters had four hits. You're going to get some run production when that happens."

Bowling went 2-4 with two RBIs. Others were Willie Dooley (2-4, run), Matt Burnett (2-3, 2 RBIs), Geoff Mouser (2-3, RBI) and Josh Miller (2-3, RBI).

Josh Lilly picked up the win on the mound, throwing all seven innings and allowing three runs (one earned) off four hits and five walks with 11 strikeouts.

"They're always pretty tough," said Becker. "The kid that pitched against us today is a pretty good pitcher. After the Sikeston game I was proud of the way they responded with a good victory."

Dexter will play at Chaffee at 4:30 today.

MORLEY -- Bell City clobbered Scott Central 26-3 in five innings Wednesday, improving to 2-3 on the year.

The Cubs opened the floodgates early with 10 runs in the first inning.

"We hit the ball well in the first inning," said Bell City coach Matt Asher. "We just wanted to get it over with early."

At the plate Dominitrix Johnson 4-for-6 with a double, a triple, three stolen bases, three runs and four RBIs.

Zac McIntyre was 3-for-3 with five runs and two RBIs. Ty Brown was 2-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs. Jason Rampley was 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs. C.J. Hadley was 2-for-3 with one run and three RBIs. Neil Ramsey, Luke Phillips and Ben Duncan also contributed hits.

Kenyon Wright scored two runs.

Bailey pitched the first three innings for Bell City, allowing no earned runs, two hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Johnson threw the final two frames, allowing two earned runs on six walks with three Ks.

Scott Central's Jeremy Johnson was charged with the loss. Johnson and Josh Woods had the Braves' two hits.

Bell City (2-3) will travel to Woodland today at 4 p.m.

POPLAR BLUFF -- Oran ran its record to 5-1 on Wednesday, beating Poplar Bluff 7-3. Trey Graviett pitched all seven innings for the Eagles, allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks. He took seven batters down via strikeout.

At the plate, Ryne Wood and Nathan Seyer were both 2-for-3. Tyler Nelson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Tyler Cookson, Matt Bucher and Matt Seyer also had hits.

Poplar Bluff's Adam Reynolds was charged with the loss. Blake Collins paced the Mules at the plate, batting 2-for-3 with a double.

Oran (5-1) will travel to Bloomfield today at 4 p.m.
