SIKESTON - President Roosevelt certified Sikeston as a critical war area where mortgage insurance would be available to builders of homes for war workers under the Federal Housing Administration's Title VI plan. Sen. Bennett Clark made the announcement Friday.

SIKESTON - Dr. David Morris spoke to Girl Scout Troop 57 during their meeting Monday afternoon at Fellowship Baptist Church. The veterinarian spoke on the care of dogs and cats.

SIKESTON - Terri Ray Dismuke, a senior at Kelly High School, has been awarded a President's Scholarship to Southeast Missouri State University at Cape Girardeau. She is the daughter of Jody Wagner and Bardis Dismuke Jr.


PORTAGEVILLE - The Rev. David Hulshof will be ordained to the priesthood Sunday at St. Eustachius Catholic Church.

BENTON - Amy Hubbert, Sheila Hubbert and Emily Glastetter had two hits apiece in the Lady Hawks' win over Charleston Thursday. Denitra Kern picked up the victory while Owens took the loss for the Lady Blue Jays. Kern struck out three and walked nine and Owens struck out three and walked three. Dugan and Wally had two hits apiece for Charleston. Kelly (2-0) will host Delta today, while the Lady Blue Jays will travel to Scott City.


NEW MADRID - Election judges representing both candidates carefully watched as votes from the April 7 Parma election were recounted Friday. The total didn't change though - 70 each for Floyd L. Shaw and Landall Carter, candidates for Ward 2 aldermen. They will now go back to voters seeking their support in a special election.
