CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Charter Communications has launched Charter High Definition Service, or Charter HD, to offer super-clear high-definition programming to residents of Southeast Missouri.

Charter HD will offer customers designated cable channels in high definition, including ESPN, TNT, HBO, Showtime, HDNet and HDNet Movies. HDNet and HDNet Movies are the first national networks that transmit all of their programming in 1080i HD, the highest-quality format of high-definition television.

Local broadcast channels are to be added soon, possibly within the next 30

-60 days, according to a Charter spokesman.

"Customers in Southeast Missouri are clamoring for high-definition programming," said Dave Miller, vice president, Mid America Region for Charter. "Charter has developed a lineup that gives customers an unmatched HD experience, whether it's for their favorite HBO original shows such as 'The Sopranos' or 'Deadwood' or sporting events, which are the biggest draw.

"With the wide menu of programs and networks now offered by Charter Digital Cableā and Charter HD, we are the consumer leader in entertainment value," added Miller.

To receive the service, customers need only a high definition television and a set top converter box. Charter HD Service is $6.99 per month, which is added to customers' existing Charter bill. The digital box to receive the HD channels is $3 more per month than what current digital customers are paying now. There is no additional equipment to buy and no long-term commitment.

Charter HD is available to customers in Cape Girardeau and Cape Girardeau County, Benton, Bertrand, Chaffee, Charleston, East Prairie, Mississippi County, Gordonville, Howardville, Jackson, Kelso, Lilbourn and rural Lilbourn, New Madrid, Marston, Miner, Morehouse, Oran, Scott City, Scott County, Sikeston, village of Lambert and village of North Lilbourn.

Charter expects demand for Charter HD to be high, and will serve customers on a first-come, first-serve basis.
