SIKESTON - Eleven Sikeston men were accepted in the services at Jefferson Barracks on May 26. Those who entered the U.S. Navy were: James Hirschel Wicker, James Thomas Singleton, John Paul Stewart, Grover Cleveland Lindsey, Truman Lester Probst, Bernard James Merrick Jr., John William Emmond and Robert Norman Tate. Those entering the U.S. Army were: Spurlin Edward Nelson, Leo McCormick and Robert Edward Lee.

SIKESTON - Ground breaking ceremonies Wednesday symbolized the start of construction of a plant for the Hedrick Concrete Products Corp., which is moving to Sikeston from Delta.

SIKESTON - The torch that will open the 1984 Summer Olympic Games will spend Monday night in Sikeston. The Olympic torch, which has come all the way from Greece and is en route to Los Angeles, Calif., will be arriving in Sikeston at approximately 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. Tuesday. Two caravans, one of support and care personnel and the other with the runners, who take turns carrying the torch (known as cutter runners), are volunteers and qualified to run by AT&T, which is sponsoring the torch relay.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Middle School recently announced their Citizens of the Year winners. They were: Bryan Elliot, Stephanie Beck, Tanyane Patterson and Justin Pobst.

SIKESTON - The First Annual Sikeston Jaycee Volleyball Tournament was conducted at Danny's Place. The tournament was a charity fund-raiser for Camp Wonderland, an Ozark Mountain camp sponsored by the Jaycees for developmentally disabled children.
