Your view: Good work noted

Dear Mike

I saw you at the Sikeston Lions Club Golf Tournament yesterday (April 16) but I did not get the opportunity to visit. However, I felt compelled to communicate with you concerning the event.

Despite horrific wind gusts and the threat of rain, what a great event for Sikeston, the Lions Club, all who had the opportunity to participate in any capacity and, most importantly, people who benefit from the funds raised from the tournament.

I was invited to play with two Lions Club members from Charleston. Through them, I have become aware of much of the good work that this organization does, especially with people needing sight and vision attention. I saw many friends from Sikeston and Southeast Missouri at the tournament. I took note that lawyers, business people, professionals, wives, etc., were donating their time and effort to fry hamburgers, serve as hole marshals, worked registering tournament players and doing a variety of other jobs and duties. Is it not refreshing to see such a positive thing happening in times of major concern - war, crime, recession?

Last night, as I read the Standard Democrat, I saw a picture of the Sikeston Lions Club donating funds to a community project. Many seem to benefit from the work of unselfish, community-minded people. I tip my hat to the Sikeston Lions Club and all the many sponsors that I saw listed on the scoreboard. For those of us who consider ourselves golfers, not only did we have a great day, but maybe through our financial support we also touched someone's life in a small way.

Steve Hodges,
