Sikeston 10-year-olds fall; 14-year-olds win

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. -- The Sikeston 10-year-old all-stars lost in the first round of the Cal Ripken World Series to the host team Russellville, 14-4 in four innings.

It's Sikeston's first loss since the team was formed.

Russellville scored five runs in the second inning and eight more in the third to pull out to a commanding 13-0 lead.

Sikeston scored four runs in the top of the fourth to cut the lead to 13-4, but Russellville added one run in the bottom of the fourth to enforce the mercy rule.

Sikeston scored all four of its runs with two outs.

Trey Tigart knocked in the fourth run to keep Sikeston's hopes alive, but Russellville ended the game when Hipps scored on a Michael Henderson single.

Russellville out-hit Sikeston 12-7 in the game.

Hayden Hipps was the winning pitcher while Tyler Anderson took the loss for Sikeston.

Sikeston did get a double from Drew Harper but that was the only extra-base hit for the team.

Hipps also went 4-4 at the plate for Russellville.

14-year-olds win

LAMAR, Col. -- The Sikeston 14-year-old Junior Babe Ruth all-stars won their first game in the Midwest Plains Regional in Lamar, Col., on Thursday. Sikeston defeated Nebraska 7-1 to advance to the second round against Kansas on Friday, but results were not available at press time.

Roy Lee All-Stars win

WICHITA, Kan. -- The 7th grade Roy Lee All-Star basketball team, based out of Charleston, won its pool with three victories.

The team, comprised of athletes from Charleston, New Madrid, Cape Girardeau and Scott County Central advanced in the bracket among 56 teams in the National MAYBA Tournament in Wichita, Kan.

Roy Lee defeated the Dallas Panthers 58-44, Arkansas All-Stars 50-32 and Oklahoma Heat 68-37.
