Richard Sandvos

SIKESTON -- Richard Lee "Dick" Sandvos, 64, died at 1:15 p.m. Aug. 8, 2003, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

Born May 16, 1939, in Illmo, son of the late Hugo E. and Alma Anna Mirgaux Sandvos, he moved from Peoria, Ill., to Sikeston in 1997. A member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sikeston, he retired as a tool crib supervisor for Caterpillar in Peoria. Having been a recipient of a lung transplant, he became an organ donor after his death.

On June 10, 1961, in Sikeston, he married Mary Lou Layton who survives of the home.

In addition to his wife, survivors include: four sons and three daughters-in-law, Rick and Beverly Sandvos of Memphis, Tenn., Dave and Dana Sandvos of St. Louis, Matt and Lisa Sandvos of Springfield, Ill., and Mark Sandvos of Columbia; one daughter and son-in-law, Stephanie and Bob Evans of St. Louis; 10 grandchildren, Ben Evans, Colleen Evans, John Evans, Daniel Evans, Sam Evans, Emma Sandvos and Abby Sandvos of St. Louis, Kristen Sandvos and Will Sandvos of Memphis and Rachel Sandvos of Springfield; and one brother, David Sandvos of Scott City.

One sister, Amelia Sandvos, preceded him in death on July 21, 2003.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Blanchard Funeral Chapel in Sikeston with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. The Rev. Steve Schneider, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, will officiate.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. The Rev. Steve Giljum, assistant pastor of St. Clements Church in St. Louis, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Sikeston Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be: Rick Sandvos, Dave Sandvos, Matt Sandvos, Mark Sandvos, Bob Evans and Joe Jackson.

Honorary pallbearers will be: John Layton, Jerry Obermark, John Woodard, Henry Walter, Ken Kocher and John Mirgaux.
