CHARLESTON - Ervin O. Hoffmeister, 28, of Chaffee, drowned in the Mississippi River near Price's Landing north of Charleston Friday when a boat in which he was going duck hunting was swamped.

SIKESTON - Three Sikeston players, Tanner, Bryant and Boardman, were placed on the first team of the Big Eight Conference All-Star team named in a poll of the coaches of the conference by the American Republic at Poplar Bluff.

SIKESTON - Gene Gilbert, president of Gilbert Construction Co. of St. Louis, signed contracts Tuesday at the board of education office to build a new 46,000-square-foot high school field house.

SIKESTON - The name of Mrs. Faye Richardson was drawn Tuesday night at the winner of the "Hi Mom" contest of Local 6316 Communication Workers of America. She was awarded a six-minute telephone call to Vietnam, which she will make in Decemter to her son, Sgt./4 Gary L. Mize, stationed in Dong Tam.

SIKESTON - The second annual City of Lights program in Sikeston was kicked off Monday night when Rep. Dennis Ziegenhorn of Sikeston plugged in the lights for the Christmas tree located outside the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce office. Numerous people braved the cold to witness the event, which also included an invocation given by the Rev. Thomas Plumbley of the First Christian Church, and special music by the mixed chorus of Sikeston High School, led by director William Grega.

SIKESTON - High winds took the roof off a building on West Malone Street at about 8 p.m. on Sunday. The roof was torn from its rafters and headed toward Scott Manor Apartments to the south. It landed onto a telephone and power line, causing a brief interruption in service. The building is owned by Ken Storey.

SIKESTON - Taneka Tate of Sikeston was the winner of the Weed and Seed national poster contest.
