MATTHEWS - Marine Corporal John Aaron White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis J. White of Matthews, has completed three months of highly intensive training with an officer candidates class at Quantico, Va., and has been commissioned a second lieutenant.

SIKESTON - Miss Kathy Hahs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Hahs of Sikeston, was crowned queen of the District Explorers ball held at Charleston.

SIKESTON - C.E. Stauffer celebrated his 100th birthday doing some of the things he loves to do, capped off with a little dancing with his wife and friends at a senior citizens party. "Charlie," as his friends call him, was guest of honor at the party at the Elks Club.

PORTAGEVILLE - The Portageville boys basketball team read aloud a Bible verse (I Samuel 17:49) in its locker room following Saturday night's dramatic 60-58 double-overtime win over Cardinal Ritter in Class 2A quarterfinal action. No kidding. Then the team, all on one knee and huddled in a circle, paused for a moment of silent prayer. After that special moment, Bulldogs coach Jim Bidewell stood, wiped his brow and released a great sigh of relief.
