CANALOU - James "J.D." Basinger, 68, died Jan. 29, 2004, at Sells Rest Home in Matthews.

Born Nov. 6, 1935, in Pocahontas, Ark., to the late Delbert and Ida Ellen Jackson Basinger, he attended Big Ridge General Baptist Church in Canalou and worked for Noranda Aluminum. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

He was married to Armetta Faye Chapman, who preceded him in death on Sept. 22, 2002.

Survivors include: three daughters, Anita Joann Drake, Lavonna Faye Foraker and Donna Kaye Mitchell of Canalou; two brothers, Carl Eugene Basinger and Allen Basinger of Sikeston; five sisters, Shirley Wallace of the state of Arizona and Mary Vincent, Wanda Hinshaw, Mae Stokes and Ola Faye Basinger of Sikeston; and two grandchildren.

One brother, Charles Basinger, preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston, where services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Gaylord Grindstaff, pastor of the Big Ridge General Baptist Church, will officiate.

Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sikeston with full military honors provided by the New Madrid American Legion Post 595.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Mitchell, Jason McDonald, Rick Foraker, Wayne Davidson, Floyd Halterman and Justin Holder.
