Sikeston soccer drops road game to Notre Dame, 1-0

Wednesday, October 6, 2004

CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Sikeston soccer team dropped another tough match to Notre Dame on Tuesday, falling 1-0 on the road.

Notre Dame's Bryce Willen scored the game's only goal on an assist from Frankie Ellis at the 29:00 mark.

"We had just as many breaks as they had," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long.

"We had miscommunication on our defense and they got a breakaway about midfield and it was just him and the goalie. That may happen once every three years, getting a breakaway from that far out."

Notre Dame out-shot the Bulldogs 22-to-15. Scott Droddy came up with 21 saves.

But Notre Dame continues to baffle the Bulldog soccer team, which falls to 7-7-1.

"Right now they've got our number," said Long.

"Like I told the guys, these are just regular season battles. The war we want to win is the district championship. That's what people will remember so hopefully we can get another shot at them."

Sikeston's junior varsity lost to Notre Dame 3-1. Chris Matthews scored the Bulldogs' lone goal on a penalty kick.

The junior varsity is now 3-8-1.

Sikeston will host Cape Central today at 5 p.m.
