Motorists need to be aware of deer crossing highways

SIKESTON -- Last month started the beginning of white-tail deer rutting season.

That means more deer movement in and around highways in Scott County and surrounding counties. Southeast Missouri is no stranger to deer vehicle accidents.

To protect yourself when driving always be on guard, scan the area on either side of the road ahead, slow down if you see deer, keep your guard up after deer cross the road because other deer may follow, reschedule travel to reduce time on the road near dawn or dusk.

If you were to hit a deer, contact any law enforcement agency. This will be to your advantage if you file an insurance claim. It also helps us track the frequency of deer-vehicle accidents statewide.

With the increasing numbers of deer in Scott County, roads to on watch for are North Highway 61, Highway N, Highway 77 and I-55.

Please slow down when traveling these roads and remember to never jeopardize yourself. If necessary, hit the deer rather than cause bodily harm to yourself or someone else.

We also have documented deer being hit in and around the Sikeston area, so when traveling the edge of town, remember to scan around because deer also move in these areas as well.
