Virginia Battles

BERNIE -- Virginia Battles, 82, died May 2, 2005, at Beverly Health and Rehabilitation Center in Bloomfield.

Born Feb. 21, 1923, in Bernie, daughter of the late Albert Sidney and Anna Mae Smith Johnson Sr., she was a former employee of the Rainey Funeral Home in Bernie and had previously worked at Brown Shoe Co. and Elder Manufacturing Co. She was also a member of the Bernie Christian Church.

She was first married James C. Ott. Then on Jan. 26, 1963, at Caruthersville, she married John P. Battles who preceded her in death on Dec. 31, 1989.

One daughter, Janice Lee Ott; one brother, Albert Sidney Johnson Jr.; one sister, Ruby Jo Tanner; and two great-grandchildren also preceded her in death.

Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Nina Ott of Dexter; two grandchildren and a grandchild-in-law, Jerry Ott of Dexter and Kenny and Windy Ott of Dexter; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. R.P. Davison will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
