SIKESTON - At the Rex Theater, "Lady in the Dark" with Ginger Rogers and Ray Milland, plus, "So This is Washington" with Lum and Abner.


HAYTI - Miss Mary L. Smith accepted a position with the Pemiscot Motor Truck Line at Hayti and started working there Monday.

SIKESTON - Carol Freeland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Freeland and a sixth grade student, won first place in the Daughters of the American Revolution essay contest at Matthews School. The title was "George Washington's Advice."

NEW MADRID - Riverboats may be landing once again here. An opportunity to bring life back to the area was the way plans to renovate the downtown area and construct tourist attractions along the Mississippi Riverfront were described. Other recommendations include construction of a marina complex which would provide docking and storage facilities as well as fuel and oil sales.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston City Council approved the sale of land between the Sikeston Bootheel Humane Society and the Board of Municipal Utilities. The Board of Municipal Utilities met with the city council in special session Wednesday to seek authorization to sell the real estate to the Humane Society for $10,000 to be made in five equal payments.


BENTON - Sheriff Bill Ferrell is assisting the local Social Security Administration and the welfare office by providing names of persons incarcerated for more than 30 days, in accordance with federal mandates. Under the SSI/SSA programs, prisoners are suspended from receiving payments for any month in which they reside in a public institution. The individual does not have to be convicted of a crime. Ferrell said that it is estimated that millions of dollars will be saved by the implementation of this program.
