NEW MADRID - Terry Stevens, elected New Madrid County Sheriff in 1966, could be forced from office due to the state's constitution forbidding nepotism. Stevens is to decide today whether he will submit his resignation as sheriff or refute the allegation in an ouster action which would be heard in Circuit Court. New Madrid County Prosecuting Attorney H. Riley Bock said he was approached earlier in the week with allegations Stevens had hired his sister-in-law to transport a female prisoner to the state prison in Chillicothe on Sept. 24. After investigating the allegations, he then spoke with the sheriff and presented the evidence. According to the Missouri State Constitution, Article 7, Section 6, it is illegal for any officeholder to hire someone within fourth degree of relationship. An officeholder who does so will forfeit their office, the constitution states.
