SIKESTON - Contributions to the Red Cross Fund drive in Sikeston alone amounted to approximately $3,000, according to Harry Dover, countywide drive chairman.

CHARLESTON - A special high school bond election was called for March 29 by the Charleston R-1 Board of Education after heated debate. This resulted after it was decided that bonds approved in an election March 2, 1965, for a $1.4 million high school building were invalid.


BENTON - The Scott County Heart Fund approached the $3,000 mark today. Lee Shell, treasurer, reports. He said that Miner, Morley, Vanduser and New Hamburg have not reported collections.

SIKESTON - Gasoline prices in Sikeston have been reported to be the lowest in the state over the weekend. The most recent low is 55.9 cents per gallon, after falling from the 80-cent range earlier last week. Unleaded and regular gasoline is selling for the same price at most stations. Area residents are taking advantage of the low prices to fill their gasoline tanks in order to drive around enjoying the milder weather.


CAPE GIRARDEAU - Coast Guard crews have removed two barges that ran aground and spilled into the Mississippi River in the same area that two other major spills occurred last year. The barges became stuck on the rocks, just below the bridge at Thebes, Ill. early Friday. An undetermined amount of the 60,000 barrels of crude oil leaked into the river.

SIKESTON - Spelling tough words didn't stop second grade students from East Prairie's Doyle Elementary School from making a donation of more than $1,900 to the Kenny Rogers Cerebral Palsy Telethon. The students asked local residents to donate money for every word spelled correctly.
