Bud Jones
SIKESTON -- Vernon L. "Bud" Jones, 71, formerly of Charleston, died at 8:45 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
Born Sept. 6, 1939, in Charleston, to the late Naldo Vernon and Jewell Irene Brothers Jones, he had lived in Scott and Mississippi counties most of his life and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Charleston. After serving four years with the U.S. Navy, he returned to Charleston. He was employed as a Missouri State Water Patrolman at Lake of the Ozarks prior to his service in local law enforcement and later was employed with Wal-Mart, retiring in 2001.
An Eagle Scout, he served as Scout Master in Charleston for several years, was a member of the Sikeston Elks Lodge 2319 and Charleston VFW Post 4294. He was a member of the B.A.S.S. Federation and Bootheel Bass Busters, and was chosen to be a member of the Missouri B.A.S.S. Federation fishing team in 1984, 1985 and 1986 competitions.
On Aug. 7, 1959, he married Marjorie Ferrell who survives of the home.
Also surviving are: one daughter and son-in-law, Lee Ann and Bill Nace of Sikeston; one granddaughter, Caroline Brooks Nace of Sikeston; and his mother-in-law, Dona B. Ferrell of Charleston.
Visitation is at 10 a.m. Saturday until time of services at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Charleston. The Rev. Michael Brewer, pastor of the First Baptist Church, and the Rev. Gerald Collier of Ironton will officiate. Eulogists will be Britton Ferrell and Brooks Yoviene.
Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery. The U.S. Naval Funeral Honor Guard from Millington, Tenn., will conduct military graveside rites.
Pallbearers will be: A.A. "Bud" Cervantes III, Charles Rose, Marshall Heisler, John Hooper, Bud Reynolds, Jonathan Yoviene, Britton Ferrell, David Bizzell, Ferrell Elliott, Bob Skelton and Martin Stallings.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bootheel Bass Busters.
