Sikeston golfers take eighth in Notre Dame invitational

JACKSON -- The Sikeston golf team finished eighth in the 16-team Notre Dame Invitational Tournament at Bent Creek Golf Course Monday. The course belonged to Poplar Bluff, Cape and Jackson who finished 1, 2 and 3 respectively while capturing all of the medalist awards too.

"Those teams are experienced and it shows," said Sikeston coach Rick Oetting. "I was thrilled about a couple of the players first nine hole play and disappointed with the teams overall finish. Our inexperience at the varsity level showed in our young team today. Freshman Dakota Trevino led the dogs with 42/46 -- 88 on the cool rainy 18 hole course.

Jared Kruger shot a 43 on the front but ran out of steam to finish with a 93 followed by Bill Green's 95. De Bizzell and Trey Oetting finished the field with the Bulldogs team score of 381 to finish eighth.

"Our goal was to finish in the top with our district competitors and we fell short of that goal," said Oetting. "We know what we have to do to improve and I believe this young team can improve over the next month to reach that goal."

CHAFFEE - The Kelly Hawks baseball team notched a 17-9 victory over the host Chaffee Red Devils, on a cold and wet Monday afternoon.

Both clubs combined to commit 10 errors in the contest and collected 25 hits apiece.

Kelly and Chaffee both committed five errors apiece, while the Hawks had 16 hits and the Red Devils banged out nine hits.

Kelly got off to a fast start against Chaffee, racing out to a 6-1 lead after two innings of play.

The Hawks sealed the victory with a seven-run fourth inning, as Kelly led 13

-3 after the fourth.

The Hawks were led by Blake Lee, who went 4-for-6 with a triple and 3 RBIs. Brandon Ayers and Caleb Daughhetee each had a nice game going 3-4, while Daughhetee had two doubles in the contest for Kelly.

Jordan Felter went 2-4 and had two doubles, while John Simpher rounded out the multiple hitters for Kelly, with a 2-4 afternoon.

Chaffee was led on offense by Chris Hanback, who went 3-5 with 4 RBIs and two doubles. Brad Daugherty also went 3-5 with a double for the Red Devils.

"We were fortunate to play the game," said Chaffee head coach Brian Horrell, "it was misting on and off all game.

"Both teams did not play to the best of their abilities due to the weather. Give credit to Kelly, the are a good ball club and deserved the win."

Chaffee (1-2) travels to Cape Girardeau on Wednesday to take on Notre Dame at 4 p.m.

Scott City started off its season by committing nine errors in a five-inning thrashing from visiting New Madrid County Central.

Andy Stephens was the losing pitcher, allowing seven hits and 14 runs -- only four earned -- in over two innings.

Rynn Eskew went 2-for-4 with a double and triple for the Rams, and Cody Carlyle was 2-for-2 with a triple.

Jacob Gillis allowed just one earned run in three innings and added three hits and two RBIs at the plate to pace the Cardinals to a home win.

The game was called after five innings due to darkness.

Gillis struck out five and walked four to pick up the win. Andrew Wagoner pitched the final two innings for Woodland and added two hits and three RBIs.

Tyler Martin had two hits for the Bobcats (1-1).

Meadow Heights scored three runs in the fifth inning to win on the road. The game was called after five innings due to darkness.

Terry Wagner had three hits for the Panthers, who played their first game of the season.

Nathan Revelle pitched three innings for the win, and Heath Fulton pitched a scoreless fifth for the save.

Austin Hahs and Walter Ruesler had two hits apiece for Oak Ridge.

SOFTBALL

Kayla Seabaugh struck out eight and had four hits offensively in a road win.

Seabaugh improved to 2-0 on the mound, holding Woodland to just two hits.

Kaci Menz added four hits for Delta (2-0), Shea Smith had three and Seabaugh added three RBIs.

The Portageville softball team defeated Scott City 5-4 on Monday.

Portageville rallied from a three-run deficit for the victory. Lechenette led Portageville with a home run while Walker added added two hits, with a home run and a triple.

Deanna Deere recorded 13 strikeouts in picking up the win. She also had a double while Kellye Penn had a double.
