Your view: History comes alive

Thursday, March 30, 2006

Dear Sikestonians,

I want to take this opportunity to tell everyone how terrific the support for what The Sikeston Depot does has been--not just for all the year-round events created for your enjoyment-- but especially concerning the recent Civil War Reenactment.

What a tremendous way for families to learn about the history imbedded in this town!

Watching this event build--through the efforts of teacher Rick Justice and the excellent troop of teenaged citizens he leads--is something all here should be proud of. The frightful weather that weekend was a challenge to the reenactors at the encampment in their canvas tents.

Imagine the dedication of those kids, that teacher, and "soldiers" from several states to camp in such weather! However, the three scheduled battles times had sunshine and hearty crowds, "it was a blast from the past!"

The Battle of Sand Ridge Reenactment brings many to town and adds to economic development and tourism, benefitting everyone. Please continue to lend your support to them, build upon this unique experience that teaches firsthand this amazing utterly unique chapter of your local history.

Additionally, I wish to thank the neighbors of the Depot and the Scott Matthews Farm for their helpfulness and forbearance as we staged this exciting weekend. Craftmasters KidSmart, Rent-A-Center, Falkoff's, Malone Plaza, Heartland Office Supply and all the other merchants of Historic Downtown Sikeston were immensely helpful as they made room clearing streets and parking lots for the battle to proceed and add to the visual effect for the audience. Special thanks too, to the Department of Public Safety for their work and helpfulness in making it all a success.

Sikeston has so much to be proud of, shine on!

Delilah Tayloe, Administrator Sikeston Depot Historical and Cultural Center
