SIKESTON - Five committees were

appointed to explore ways of improving

substandard housing in Sikeston at a 9

a.m. meeting today at the Mid-Towner

Restaurant. The meeting was called at the

urging of Mayor Kendall Sikes and the

Rev. Joseph H. Wagner, pastor of the

First Methodist Church. About 10 church

representatives and interested laymen

attended.

SIKESTON - The inaugural flight for

Sun Airlines Corporation will leave from

the Sikeston Airport at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 14,

en route to St. Louis, George Caleshu,

company president, announced today. A

return flight will come from St. Louis

about 5-5:30 p.m. daily, Wendell Caskey,

airport manager, said.

SIKESTON - A large crowd turned out

for Saturday's sesquicentennial parade at

Charleston and watched former Sheriff

"Pedro" Simmons bring in his man.

Flappers and square dancers entertained

along the parade route and floats depicted

historic events.

SIKESTON - Add another mosquito

species to the environment of the

Bootheel. However, the Asian Tiger

species, although a known disease carrier,

shouldn't be anymore dangerous or

aggressive than the pests already here,

says an area entomologist. "They're just

one more mosquito," said Ray Nabors

with the University of Missouri Delta

Center at Portageville.

SIKESTON - Word that the district

received a $67,930 grant through the

Missouri School-aged Children's Health

Services Program was welcomed news to

the School Board and to many parents of

students in the Sikeston School District.

The effort is a collaborative measure

between the Department of Health,

Elementary and Secondary Education

and Social Services.

SIKESTON - Between 5 an 11 p.m.

Wednesday, a burglary occurred at 412

Clayton Street. According to the Sikeston

Department of Public Safety, the suspect

kicked in the rear door to take assorted

stereo equipment and a pair of tennis

shoes for a total value of $1,570.
