Voting yes on Prop B

Thursday, October 5, 2006

I really appreciated the story "Living on minimum wage can be hard" that ran in your paper on September 22. Too often people think that low wage workers are teenagers, but the story of Bernice Brooks, a 59-year-old receptionist who is trying to make ends meet on $5.15 an hour, shows us that this is not always the case.

No one can survive on $5.15 an hour. I am a mother of two young adults whom also have minimum wage jobs. In fact, both sons have to work two jobs in order to support their children. This leaves them with inadequate funds to survive on their own. Nor the essential time needed to be an active father with their children. How can this be fair to our grandchildren and their future? That is why I'm voting yes on Proposition B when I go to vote on November 7.

It is appalling that people like Bernice have been waiting for almost 10 years for Congress to raise the minimum wage. Thank goodness, we don't have to wait any longer. We can fix this ourselves on Election Day.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Z. Burns
