NEW MADRID -- The New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles had no answers for the Notre Dame Lady Bulldogs in a 77-34 SEMO Conference loss on Monday.

"That's the kind of powerhouses we go up against in this conference," said NMCC coach Lance Tollison. "We're one of the smaller Class 3 schools in the conference, going up against Class 5 schools, and it's difficult to close that gap."

A 12-0 run midway of the first period sent the Bulldogs to a 23-10 lead going into the second quarter. Then in the second, the Eagles, ineffective against the Notre Dame press that forced turnover after turnover, were outscored 26-7.

"We broke the press in the first quarter and seemed to handle it and they really didn't do anything different with the press in the second quarter, other than pick up their intensity level, and we made some poor decisions, trying to dribble through it instead of passing through it," said Tollison. "We made some bad decisions and it snowballed from there on us."

The Eagles (2-3, 0-1 in conference) had their best quarterly offensive output in the third with 13 points as the period expired with Notre Dame ahead 69

-30 and initiating a running clock throughout the final quarter.

"Hopefully, when we get over this rough stretch with some bigger schools, we can get back on the winning track," said Tollison, whose Eagles enjoyed a breakout year in 2005 with 13 wins.

Shamieka Williams led NMCC with 15 points and Jasmine Flennoy was scoring runner-up with six.

Alex Fowler paced Notre Dame (1-1, 1-0) with 17, Kristain Burger had 16 and Merideth Medlin 14.

NMCC dropped the junior varsity game, 60-22. Joanna McDaniel led the Eagles with 11 and Tameka Williams added seven.

PORTAGEVILLE -- The Portageville Lady Bulldogs cruised past the Charleston Lady Bluejays, despite the absence of two starters out with the flu.

With two of its top players, Hannah Rone and Lauren Kellums, unavailable, the undefeated Bulldogs (6-0) broke away early with a 27-8 first-quarter lead.

Charleston narrowed the gap a bit with a 14-9 advantage in the second period as the halftime scoreboard read 36-22.

The Bulldogs closed the deal with a 33-11 edge in the second half.

Kellye Penn topped Portageville with 15 points and also led the rebound statistic with eight. Julia Drake added 12 points and Brittney Walker had 10.

Jerquawnda Sherrell led Charleston with 15.

Portageville completed the sweep with a 43-21 victory in the junior varsity contest.

Talisa Walker and Courtney Chamberlain led the j.v. Bulldogs with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Next up for Portageville is a home game against Bootheel Conference foe Kennett on Thursday.
