SHS rips Fredericktown
SIKESTON - The Sikeston Bulldogs soccer team overmatched the visiting Fredericktown Blackcats on Monday night at the Sikeston Complex, 8-1.
The Bulldogs exploded for six second half goals to power past the Blackcats.
Senior Blake Taylor led the offensive onslaught for the Bulldogs with four goals and dished out three assists. Fellow senior Chris Carnell tallied two goals and two assists, while sophomore Timmy Hart chipped in two goals and had an assist for Sikeston.
"All three of those guys dominated the game tonight," said Sikeston head coach Derrick Long. "Those guys work well together and have excellent ball skills. When those guys have open space, they are extremely dangerous. Often opposing teams stuff them up by double-teaming Blake. Tonight, once Carnell and Timmy got going, it opened it up for Blake to do his thing."
Sikeston controlled the offensive action from the start outshooting the Blackcats 13-4 in the first half and 32-11 throughout the entire game.
Carnell got the Bulldogs on the board early as he scored at 9:00 on a nice pass from Taylor. Carnell hit a nice a 18-foot shot over the out-stretched arm of Fredericktown goalie Eli Skaggs for a 1-0 lead.
Before the end of the first half, Taylor scored his first goal of the game on an assist from freshman Mikey Botkin.
Hart scored his first goal of the game at 52:00 off a corner kick from Carnell.
At 65:00, Hart scored again this time from 30-feet out as he kicked across his body toward the left side of the goal and past Skaggs. Taylor assisted on the goal. Three minutes later, Taylor scored on a pass from Carnell to put the Bulldogs up 5-0.
Fredericktown (6-9) finally got on the scoreboard at 70:00 on a penalty kick goal by Dustin Bess after a penalty was called in the box on Sikeston.
"I was a little disappointed on their penalty shot," said Long. "It was just laziness on the defensive end and that should have not ever happened."
Taylor got the hat trick for Sikeston at 75:00 on a header from a directional pass off the foot of Hart. Taylor scored career goal No. 83 three minutes later off a pass from Caleb Davidson. Taylor is now four goals away from tying the Sikeston career leader in goals scored held by Adam Garrett.
Carnell scored 30 seconds after Taylor's fourth goal as Taylor stole a pass from a Blackcat player and found Carnell who blasted a 35-foot shot past a stunned Skaggs in goal.
"I was pleased with the win especially since it was a district matchup," said Long. "Any time you can put an exclamation point against a district team, it may help with the seeding process. The next four regular season games we are going to play all out and hopefully we will be peaking by districts."
In the junior varsity contest, Sikeston improved to 3-6-1 with a 4-2 win over the Blackcats. Jordan Davis and Mike Brown each scored two goals apiece to pace the Bulldogs.
Darin Dicus had three assists and Stuart Strom helped out with a assist for Sikeston.
The Bulldogs have won two straight after they got the mini streak going last Saturday with a 1-0 shutout over state-ranked West Plains.
The Zizzers ranked No. 7 in the state got blanked by a stingy Sikeston defense and a wall in goal known as junior Scott Droddy.
Sikeston scored their lone goal off the foot of Hart on an assist by Taylor.
Sikeston (7-11-1) hosts the Jackson Indians today at 5 p.m. at the Sikeston Complex.
SIKESTON -- The Sikeston junior varsity team improved to 3-3 on the season with a 40-0 victory against Caruthersville on Monday at SPS Stadium.
Sikeston raced out to a 20-0 halftime lead and were never threatened.
Sikeston opened the scoring with a Vince Howard 45-yard touchdown run. Howard then added a 15-yard TD run combined with a Stephen Jackson two-
point conversion reception for a 14-0 lead.
Tommie Strong broke loose for a 35-yard touchdown run to push the Bulldog lead to 20-0.
In the second half, quarterback Michael Payne scored on a 3-yard plunge. Tyrone Bateman scored on a 40-yard run combined with a two-point conversion to make it 34-0.
Strong scored a second touchdown in the fourth quarter, this time a 40-yard run to reach the final margin.
Sikeston will host Jackson next Monday at 6 p.m.
POTOSI -- The Kelly cross country team competed in the Potosi Invitational on Saturday.
In junior varsity action, Cody Kern placed first in the 3.1 mile race with a time of 18:27. Brett Harper took 26th place with 20:13. Omar Campos took 34th place at 20:39 and Sam Nelson placed 57th at 21:28.
On the girls side in the junior high division, Megan Wheeler placed 65th with a time of 13:19.
Kelly will be in action Thursday at 3:30 p.m. when they go to Jackson for conference. They will run again on Saturday at 11 a.m. against North County.
