Lady Hawks blow past Scott City, 11-1
Kelly's Jessica Riley earned win on the mound
BENTON -- It didn't take long for the Kelly Lady Hawks to put away the visiting Scott City Lady Rams on Tuesday afternoon, putting the ten-run rule into effect in a 11-1 five inning game.
The quick pace, which was just a little bit over an hour, was mostly due to the solid pitching of Jessica Riley who threw all five innings in the shortened game.
The senior opened the Lady Hawks first home game by giving up only one earned run, on six hits and no walks. She also had one strike out.
"Even though she doesn't have much speed behind her it is hard to hit," Kelly head coach Rhonda Ratledge said about her starter. "Because your used to coming around really quick and when you do your on top of the ball or your under it. So sometimes it's hard to get a good solid hit off of her."
Even when the Lady Rams did make solid contact with the ball it seemed to be right at a Kelly fielder. Which is a lot that could be said about the Kelly defense.
"They were hitting her (Riley)," Ratledge said. "But the defense behind her were making some good plays."
The Lady Hawks made only one error throughout the game.
They also rattled the bats with eight hits and managed to score a run in every inning. Starting with two in the first, two in the second, three in the third and fourth innings and topped it off with a walk-off run in the fifth.
The speed of leadoff hitter Londyn Backfisch paid dividends for their first run of the game. Backfisch reached first base with a bunt and then quickly stole second and third on consecutive pitches. Haley Glastetter grounded out to the pitcher later in the inning, but that was still enough for Backfisch to scoot home.
She didn't need the speed in the second inning, unless she wanted to fly around the bases for her solo home run over the center field wall. Backfisch finished the game with three runs on two hits and one RBI.
Glastetter, Riley and Carissa Klipfel all added two RBIs while Danielle Dock added one more to the total. Seven different Kelly players had at least one hit on the day.
Holli Shemonia was the leading hitter of both teams from Scott City. She connected for three hits, which were all singles, and was responsible for the only RBI for the Lady Rams. Macy Heisserer chipped in with two hits while Melanie Lacey added one for herself. Lacey also scored Scott City's lone run as well.
Next up for the Kelly Lady Hawks will be the Sikeston Lady Bulldogs. Kelly saw Sikeston in the Notre Dame Softballfest that happened during last weekend. The Lady Hawks managed a victory, but are expecting a good battle.
"We beat them in the Notre Dame tournament but things can happen," Ratledge said about their next game. "We put the ball in play against them last time and hopefully we can do that again."
