Kelly unable to solve Notre Dame pitching
Erika Reinagel strikes out 14 Lady Hawks during shutout
CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Notre Dame Lady Bulldogs improved to 19-0 on the season Monday evening as they defeated the visiting Kelly Lady Hawks by a score of 6-0.
The Lady Hawks really couldn't get things going against Notre Dame hurler Erika Reinagel as she held the visitors to just one hit while racking up 14 strikeouts. She also walked three in the victory.
"She was tremendous," said Notre Dame head coach Jeff Graviett of his winning pitcher. "Erika (Reinagel) has been tremendous all year long for us. She has four no-hitters and probably four one-hitters."
"She's got the movement and the pitches," he added. "She probably walked a few more than she's used to tonight, but Kelly's one through five, one through six hitters are very talented. She gave them fits today and held them in check."
The lone hit for the Lady Hawks came off the bat of Danielle Dock in the top of the seventh inning with one out. Kelly actually had two runners on base following the hit as Casey Kern had walked before Dock's spot in the order. Two consecutive strikeouts put an end to the only threat that the Lady Hawks really mounted in the entire contest.
Dock was handed the loss as she gave up nine hits while striking out four. Several errors by the Kelly defense contributed to the loss for the Lady Hawk pitcher.
Graviett was pleased with the fact that his squad had battled Kelly's hard-throwing starter for two consecutive meetings. In the first match-up Notre Dame came away with a 2-0 victory.
"I was very satisfied with the win," said Graviett. "Especially to get six runs off of a pitcher like Danielle Dock. She battled (us to a) 2-0 (game) last time, and we kind of expected the same kind of game. We put a little pressure on their defense and they made a few mistakes, but they're a talented team. If she throws the ball as well as she has against us in the past two games, then they're going to be a tough Class 2 opponent for anybody."
Graviett had the same to say about his own pitcher, Reinagel, stating that they'd be a tough Class 3 team to beat if she kept up her dominating performances.
Alexis Ralls, Alecia Glaus and Brooke Glastetter led the way for the Lady Bulldogs as they each finished the day going 2-for-3 at the plate. Ralls had a double, a triple and two RBIs, Glaus had a single and a double, and Glastetter had a single, a double and two runs scored.
Notre Dame scored one in the second, three in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Up next for Kelly is another road contest, today in Poplar Bluff while Notre Dame will take on Perryville on Wednesday.
